AP ENGLA&CP1: 1
Instructor: Passmore
The overall purpose of the 11th grade AP English Language and Composition course is to offer a college-level curriculum to students in order to prepare them to “write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional and personal lives” (The College Board). Students will learn to clearly and effectively analyze texts and be able to communicate about texts in their own writing using a high level of sophistication. Students will be exposed to multiple forms of writing throughout the course in both informal and formal settings. They will be encouraged to revise their writing and continually look for avenues in which to expand and improve their responses through both writing and speech.
The course is organized thematically and chronologically in units based on rhetorical modes and author’s stylistic choices within specific modes. For each unit, each major work of literature read will be accompanied by a series of non-fiction texts. These non-fiction texts will not, by any means, highlight every theme and stylistic component of the mode studied in the larger work. That’s where some of your independent research will come into play. You will have the opportunity to convey your analysis and interpretation of each of the texts you read through either essays, exams or timed writings. Timed writings are the heart and soul of this course and lead to success on the AP exam in May, 2010.
